Abraham & Oliver

10 years ago we started off our new marriage with 2 bouncy Dalmatians. After about 6 or 7 years the dogs had become an old married couple just like us – nothing was very exciting around our house anymore. After seeing a "spot" on channel 7 news about how the 101 Dalmatians movie would negatively affect Dalmatian Rescue, we decided that we had plenty of room for an orphaned Dalmatian and it might even spice up our household. We called the Dalmatian Rescue hot line and Beth called us back the next day. She directed us to several dogs in foster homes and we spent the week going from home to home to check out the dogs. They were all very sweet but my husband Zack (who was a little bit worried) said "I’ll know the right dog when I get "that feeling" – I can’t explain it but I’ll know it when I feel it". I thought, "Ok, this will take forever", but we kept looking.

Late one Sunday we stopped to see "Joe Friday" – later to be named "Abraham" – and we BOTH immediately got "that feeling" – worse than being struck by lightening … it’s when your heart suddenly doubles in size and becomes covered with little black spots!! We adopted him on January 31, 1997 – truly the happiest day of my life! Abraham fit right in, he is a clown and a show off and a snuggly mommy’s boy! He got our other 2 dogs to start playing chase, wrestling, and tug-of- war again. I snapped out of the mild depression that had been hanging over me for a few years and Zack took up jogging again with his new energetic running partner Abraham! We call Abraham our family Prozac! He has added SO much joy, love and fun to our home, we can’t imagine how blah life would be without him.

With 3 Dalmatians we officially became Dalmatian freaks with spotted clothes, spotted purses, spotted comforters etc. Like Jaz’s family we also removed all carpeting from our house, installed another dog door and wear mainly gray colored clothes in an attempt to hide the excess fur.

Last Fall we started fostering dogs for Dalmatian Rescue and have enjoyed it very much. It has been very rewarding and we even found a wonderful home for our first foster dog, Morgan, in just 2 days. Morgan spends her vacations here and comes over for birthday parties so we get to see her often.

Our most recent foster dog, "Boomer" had severe separation anxiety and was difficult to place. He came back to us a couple of times due to his intense anxiety problems so we affectionately called him "Boomerang". We finally decided that he just wanted to stay here with us so we changed his name to "Oliver" (so he’ll never boomerang again) and we adopted him. Oliver is the baby brother and everyone here loves him. Dr. Abraham, the cure-all, is working hard to get Oliver over his anxiety and he is doing great!

We could not be happier! Gone are the evenings of sitting on the couch with a dog at our feet. It’s now spotted wrestling matches and tug-of-war, and lots of doggy kisses. We have that heart filled polka-dotted "feeling"!
