Ruby and Max

Last fall we lost our Dalmatian of 13 years to cancer. As most dog owners know one can become very attached to a dog. Not only were the adults in the family saddened by the death of our Dalmatian but so were our kids, ages 13 and 9. The kids took the loss better than we did and were ready for a new dog the next week.

We found Dalmatian Rescue on the Internet and knew we were in trouble when we saw "Ashley" up for adoption. We thought about it for a week and decided to go visit her at the Denver Dumb Friends League, but unfortunately she was already adopted. The adults in the family were relieved and disappointed at the same time, and while hoping to wait until summer to get a new dog, our daughter kept checking the Dalmatian Rescue web site. Soon we heard about "Dee Dee", a Dal in a foster home waiting to be adopted. We talked to the foster family of Dee Dee and found out she was a great dog, then met Beth White and Dee Dee in person and fell in love with her. We adopted her and renamed her "Ruby".

It took Ruby about two days to adopt us and her new home. Ruby is a great addition to the family who seldom barks and never jumps the fence. Several days after Ruby moved in with us, Beth called to check on her. We told her she was great! Beth asked if we would consider a brother or sister for Ruby. I immediately said No! Beth accepted the decision but did ask if we would consider being a foster family for another Dalmatian? We said we would consider it.

About a week later Beth called in need of some help. There were several Dalmatians in shelters that needed foster homes. We decided to foster a dog named "Rudy" who had been in an animal shelter for quit a while. Rudy was happy to meet Ruby and they "hit it off" right away, but when we tried to put Rudy in the car, he slipped out of his collar and ran into traffic. It was tenuous at best for a few minutes but Rudy decided Ruby was just too cute to run from. When we finally got him came home it took him about ten minutes to adopt us. So as you can probably surmise we are now a two Dalmatian family, but we had to change Rudy's name to Max so the dogs could tell which one we were calling!

We have had hours and hours of fun watching Ruby and Max play, chase, jump and play tug-a-war with each other. They have been pleasant surprises since they hardly bark and the chewing thing is almost under control. They love long walks and the snow. We go to the mountains often and Ruby and Max love plowing through the deep snow.

For anyone considering adopting a Dalmatian we highly recommend it. We now also recommend two dogs as they keep one another company and mostly leave the house alone except for the snowy paw prints.

Thank you Dalmatian Rescue!!
