Cody

As I combed my 5 year old Dalmatian Lexie, I thought, "Boy it would be great to get her a companion". After all she spends a lot of time alone and even though she never complains she would be much more active if there were a friend to play with.

After getting my life partner to agree, which was not easy since we were trying to sell our house in a southern Denver suburb at the time, I began looking for the perfect companion for Lexie. I emailed and called several kennels to see if there were any Dalmatian puppies available in the next few months. One of the kennels I contacted was Melody Kennels in Ft. Collins. I was quickly emailed back that I should consider rescuing a Dalmatian. My partner had tried to convince me that we should rescue a Dal rather than get a pup from a breeder. We had talked about this before, while I was apprehensive to the idea, I was finally convinced, despite my wish to get a pup from a breeder.

Lexie was acquired as a 3 month old pup, and she is absolutely incredible, I figured that must be because of the way we raised her. Finally, after much discussion, we went to the Rescue web and saw Joey. That very instant something magical happened. So magical that a tear came to my eye and my partner sighed. We decided then this was to be Lexie’s companion. Agreeing, we had to go immediately to see him. We could not wait to cast our eyes on him in person.

The next afternoon we met Beth at the Larimer County Humane Society. We discovered the shelter had a hold on Joey for another couple, but Beth helped us get across how much we already loved this pup to the couple that had put a hold on him, and they agreed that Cody should come home with us. Lexie loved him, and they played and played. After all, she is a very smart, sensitive and socialized Dal. But when he got into the car with us to go home, Lexie was surprised and not pleased. I ended up in the back seat with both Lexie and Cody and had to get between them several times. She was depressed for several days since she was not the only one anymore. As they say, there is nothing in world like a Dalmatian with a broken heart.

Well we didn’t expect her to feel so offended, but she was. She needs to have everything the same way Cody has it. Cody is walked on a leash, so Lexie, who hasn’t walked on a leash in three years, now wants to be walked on a leash. So off we went and got and new leash - it pleased her, which pleased us. Cody needs lots of attention which he is getting; multiple walks a day and someone home at lunch to let him out and take him for a walk. He sleeps in our bed with Lexie, and is kenneled when no one is home.

He has won all of our hearts and has the same excellent demeanor as Lexie. We’re sure he will turn out incredible, just like Lexie. We will love him through his crazy childhood and always give him positive guidance. Our house is now off the market and our hands are very full with this willful little love monger. I must say we are very happy, all four of us. Many thanks to Beth who helped us find the one pup destined to share his life with the three of us! I will never doubt Dalmatian rescue groups again!
