Clover

Clover found her way to a Kansas feedlot where she whelped seven purebred pups the day after arriving. Poor Clover was extremely thin but she took very good care of her brood. The feedlot owner gave her a shed to be in and fed her one meal a day (didn't realize she needed more than that) and even so Clover put on some weight, even while nursing seven growing pups. We were called when the pups were 4 weeks old and, thankfully, Judy in Hutchinson, took the litter and raised them and cared for Clover too until she was weaned and went home with Diane to a VERY happy ending!

I was looking for a dog that would be a good fit for our family. I wasn’t looking for any particular type of dog, just a dog that would be nice for my kids that they could grow up with. We have two girls, ages 4 and 7, and we finally decided we were ready. Our oldest daughter, Madeline, wanted a dog so badly for so long. Well, I was afraid of getting a dog that would not do well with children so I had a trainer we knew, Nan, help us find one. This would be our first dog. Nan is a Dalmatian enthusiast and had a lead on Clover. Clover, she said, sounded like she might be a good match for us. Judy, her foster mother and rescuer, told us about Clover and her personality and previous situation and agreed to meet us in Salina, Kansas. Judy said when she rescued her, Clover had nursed her seven puppies for almost four weeks and was living in a barn in Kansas that some kind person had let her use and she looked pretty bad. She took Clover and her puppies into her home with her own Dalmatians and Judy was quite pleased and surprised how Clover fit right in and got along with her other dogs right away. Clover loved to be with Judy and needed a family of her own that could give her the attention she deserved. She knew Clover would do well in a home with children. Nan came with us to meet her and gave her approval and we took Clover home. Clover had some health issues when she came to us with mange and hookworm, but she has been treated and is getting her coat back nicely. She is very mild mannered and very sweet and gentle.

I feel so lucky to have found this dog. She is wonderful with my kids and any children that come to the house. She just wants to be petted and loved but not in a demanding way. She will gently give you her paw when she wants to be petted and her tail just wags. We got a kick out of her the first day we had her, she would just lay by the back door (we think she was missing her puppies) and when you got near her, that tail would just start wagging. If you would pet her and then stop, that tail would just wag harder. We recently had a birthday party for our daughter and Clover was very nice to everyone and gave anyone who wanted “the paw” and treated everyone like she knew them. When we go for walks, she always looks back and slows down for my littlest daughter, Delaney. Delaney calls Clover her “protector,” as she walks quietly beside her in the house. She never wants to impose on anyone and just wants to be loved. She is a joy to be around. She loves to go for walks and jogging with me and does well on a leash. She seemed so downtrodden for the first week or so after we got her home but her health is improving and she is doing some counter surfing so we know she feels a lot better! She is holding her head high now. She even gets to sleep in the recliner at night. We think she deserves to be spoiled a little because of what she has been through and how sweet she is to us.

Very special thanks to Nan and Judy who led me to this wonderful addition to our family.
