Mesa

Mesa

Ever since we decided to have two Dalmatians, Dilly and Stoker shared our lives. They have provided some of the best times we can remember. Unfortunately though, we learned last fall that our youngest Dal, Stoker, had prostate cancer. Stoker had to be put to sleep last April when the pain, both his and ours, became too much. We loved him too much to let him suffer any longer. Emotionally, it was the hardest thing we had ever done.

Before his death, we knew that we wanted another Dalmatian in our household so we began looking everywhere for a new puppy. Countless hours were spent looking on the internet, both at breeder sites and Dalmatian Rescue of Colorado. Stoker had come from Dalmatian Rescue as a puppy back in 2000, so our experience was good there. Then one day, we saw Mesa was up for adoption. She was a gorgeous 13 week old liver puppy and we had wanted a liver Dalmatian some day.

The next day we made the four hour drive on Memorial Day weekend to Beth White's house from our home in Poncha Springs. Amidst the herd of gorgeous black and white Dals at Beth's home was this tiny, 14 pound, brown beauty. She was shy at first, but quickly warmed up to us. It soon became clear to both Jean and I that we were not going home without her. Beth was very nice and asked several times if we really wanted a puppy because they require a lot of attention and care, but we loved raising Stoker from a puppy and we knew we had a lot of work (and a lot of love) ahead for us.

Mesa lounging by HER door! Napping after a hard day
Once she arrive at home, Mesa quickly staked out the back door as her place to soak up the sun and watch over the back yard. Having a new sister is HARD work! Dilly is getting along well with her new sister. Dilly growled a few times at first, just to let Mesa know who is boss, and Mesa learned quickly. We are still working on crate training her. She is smart enough to know that if she doesn't go in the crate right away, she gets more cheese tidbit, so she waits until there is a trail of cheese before she goes in. I think we are spoiling her!
I said, 'It's MY door!" I'm ready for my close up!
Mesa has grown quite a bit. She now weighs about 38 pounds. She graduated from puppy school a few weeks ago and she was the biggest puppy in the class! She has smiled a few times but, unfortunately, never for the camera. Mesa has been a wonderful girl for us and we look forward to having her in our family for a long time. We want to thank everyone at Dalmatian Rescue, especially Beth White, for helping add her to our family.

P. S. to Beth - You were right. It has been a lot of work, but we love it all!
