Dean and I were heartbroken last summer when Abigayle, our 11 year old Dalmatian, died of cancer. I had adopted Abigayle from the Denver Dumb Friends League when she was about one year old. Lacey, her 12 year old Border Collie mix sister, also adopted from the DDFL at about age 1, was devastated, too. The girls had been such close sisters for 10 years. We all felt a strong need very soon to open our home to another dog who needed a home. And there was no question that it had to be a Dal because Abigayle, with her playful, loving and loyal ways, had made a dog-lover of my husband and a Dalmatian lover of both of us.
Dalmatian Rescue of Colorado helped us find Angel. She was abandoned in the desert outside of El Paso, Texas. Someone found her ther and kept her for a month but then gave her up to the Humane Society for sketchy reasons. We won't question their decision too much because that's how she came to us! The Humane Society guestimated her age to be five years old and that she had been an outdoor dog with no training. So, we named her Angel, thinking that we would need the power of positive thinking on our side for her transition to our home where she would be an indoor dog. We were so wrong! Angel truly IS an angel! It didn't take long at all to train her. She does lover her treats! It is so hard to imagine this wonderful dog being abandoned... let alone more than once. She is so sweet with us and she is a wonderful sister to Lacey. They get along so well!
We broght Angel home at the end of September. She is loving it here and can't believe that she not only gets to stay in the warm house, but there is a soft bed for her in every room. That way she can follow us and be comfy wherever we are. I work at home so she is glad to have so much attention. Her favorite place to curl up is on her own special blanket on our sofa, preferably right next to Dean or me. My most special Christmas present came on Christmas day when Angel crawled up into the recliner with me and laid in my lap for the first time. Angel loves to run and jump through the snow. We think that is a new experience for her. She loves her daily walks and enjoys exploring her new back yard. When she is out in the yard, she always looks for us to make sure we don't get lost! She is very intrigued by, and reasonably gentle with, her new kitty sisters and brother. She is an absolutely wonderful girl and we are so blessed that she is a part of our family.
We would like to express huge thank you's to Beth for all she does, to Rick who drove Angel from El Paso to Albuquerque, and to Lyn, the wonderful mom who fostered Angel for two weeks until we could drive to New Mexico to pick her up. We thank you every day for our Angel!
