JR was badly abused by his previous owner who was a drug addict who kept JR locked in a room and fed him marijuana! JR was resuced with a severe ear infection and an over weight problem. He was placed in foster care and after a long siege, the ear infection was brought under control by care givers at Dalmatian Rescue of CO who fought long and hard to get him well! I have a female rescue Dal who had lost her companion older male dog. Cheyenne changed after the old guy was gone and it was recommended that I get her a new companion. I wasn't too sure about the idea since Cheyenne had gotten other dog aggressive after loosing our beloved Dakota to a brain tumor, but began looking for a rescue Dal. I found JR and fell in love with his beautiful blue eyes and his sad story! Dalmatian Rescue of CO relayed JR across the mountains (from Colorado Springs) to Grand Junction where we first met. He was depressed, unsure and had a minor ear infection. (JR has a chronic ear problem and an allergy to grains that can cause the infection to flare up. However, we think this infection may have been caused by the trip over the mountains.) He was so down on the ride from Grand Junction to Montrose, I was more than a little concerned! My sister and her husband had volunteered to help with the introductions and since Cheyenne thinks they are the second best people in her life, paid JR little attention. Then she decided to sniff this newcomer! We were all very anxious at that point, knowing how she had been with other dogs! She sniffed and it was like "Hey! Mom brought me a boy dog!" It was love at first sight! There were, of course, some discussions for a while. Some snapping. A lot of growling. Then acceptance. JR would lapse into depression every time someone came to visit and then perk up with tail wagging joy when they left without him! He thought every time we went for a ride, he was being given away again. Coming home was pure joy! Hey had a very bad ear infection flare up and I took him to the vet, leaving Cheyenne at home alone. When we returned, she could have cared less that I came home! JR was the only one that mattered! They are now inseparable. They have set their own rules such as seating in the van for rides. Cheyenne gets the front passenger seat, JR gets the seat directly behind me. On a recent visit to the vet with both dogs, JR showed how much Cheyenne means to him! Cheyenne has a habit of yelping whenever she thinks she might get hurt! (Yes! She is spoiled!) The temperature taking is the first "hurt" at the vets. JR tried his best to get between the vet tech and Cheyenne when Cheyenne began her yelping routine! He didn't growl or show any aggression! He simply tried to separate them by pushing between them! Cheyenne was taken out of the exam room for a toenail trim and JR immediately began crying. I tried to calm him and Cheyenne went into the "They are hurting me!" yelping. JR pulled away from me and the vet, charged the door and did all he could to open it! When Cheyenne returned, he inspected her and immdiately calmed down. Cheyenne had not been a playful dog since her old companion died. Now she and JR create games and play by the hour! Chasing each other around the cottonwood in the backyard seems to be a favorite. JR has adjusted to us and seems to be happy in our family. He is still a little anxious about new people coming to visit and will stay as close to me as he can until they leave. His wonderful clownish personality has emerged as he realizes this is the forever home he was looking for! He will frequently sit in front of me in the evening and "talk" by working his mouth and making groaning noises. The dogs have opposite eprsonalities. Cheyenne is hyper and impatient. JR is clam and very laid back! Cheyenne and I don't know how we ever managed to live without our JR! He has changed an other dog aggressive, spoiled brat into a fun loving. happy girl! Everyone who knows Cheyenne is amazed at the change in her and loves JR! Thank you Dalmatian Rescue of CO! Nancy M. |
