Dallas was pulled from a high kill shelter in Texas on May 25, 2008 and was fostering in a temp home in Texas while waiting for a ride to Colorado. During her time there, she went to the vet for a check up since the shelter did not do any vetting. It was discovered that this young lady was suffering from stage 3 or 4 heartworm infestation, needed extensive dental work and had a couple unknown lumps. The lumps were biopsied and they were found to be inoperable cancerous tumors. Most dogs entering stage 4 heartworm do not survive more than a year or two after that treatment due to the high levels of poison required to kill off the heartworms. With everything we learned during her vetting, it was determined that her quality of life would be minimal at best as the cancer was growing rapidly and could not be dealt with at all until after the heartworms had been dealt with. With a questionable quality of life, the decision was made by the local vet that she should be put down. While only with us a short time, Dallas was a happy girl for her last days.
