Since before I was born my family has been owned by Dalmatians. They have all been named Lady! My first Lady lived with my parents once I joined the Army (can you believe the Army wouldn't allow her to live in the barracks with me?!). I missed her terribly. She passed in 1986 and is waiting for me at the Bridge. Finally, in 1993, I was in a position that I could get another Dal... Lady Pirate Beasty was 12 weeks old when I got her, and was already showing signs of decreasing hearing. By the time she was 1.5 years old, she was completely deaf. But that's one of the reasons I chose her... if I hadn't taken her, she was going to be put down and I just couldn't let that happen to such a gorgeous girl. |
With Lady's hearing now gone, she was constantly on alert in an effort to keep people from sneaking up on her. She was extremely protective of her 'domain', to the point that I could leave the side door open when I went to work and not have to worry about anyone coming in the house! She was also fiercely loyal to those she knew and trusted. Lady loved to go camping and on long rides in HER vehicles, I just drove them. One of her favorite spots to go run and play was an area on Pikes Peak (where her cremains were scattered). She knew her |

sign language and me so well that we functioned together like any hearing dog and owner that most people never realized she was deaf unless I told them. She never let her loss of hearing get her down and always had a zest for life. In her later years, Lady began to have issues with her eyes, developing early onset cataracs, but still was able to see very well. She also was beginning to suffer from arthritis, yet was still able to get around pretty good on her own. On May 1, 2006, while laying on my bed, Lady passed quietly in her sleep, saving me from 'making the decision' that many people |

have to make. Knowing that I could never replace Lady, I decided to join the Dalmatian Rescue of Colorado effort and foster Dals in need of a temporary spot on their journey to a forever home. Many of 'my' fosters grace the Happy Beginnings Stories here and I know that Lady is proud of me and watches over me and my fosters from the Rainbow Bridge. |

I could not have asked for a better companion to share my life with for those 13.5 years. I miss you, 'Lady Bug'. I know you're free from your earthly pains now and one day I will meet you at the Rainbow Bridge and we'll have a 'family reunion'.
